R500 Laser Presentation Remote

What We Like

  • Compatibility with various operating systems and presentation programs
  • Textured grip and intuitive interface
  • Presentation timer
  • Great operating range of 65 feet (20 meters)

What We Don’t Like

  • Buttons may wear out after years of intensive use
  • Possible issues using Bluetooth to connect to MacBooks

Logitech is no stranger to the world of presentation pointers. After decades of making computing peripheral devices, the company ventured into producing wireless presenters as far back as 2003. Many refinements later, Logitech has a number of best-selling wireless presenters, including the R400, R500, and R800, which we have compared in this post.

Who is This Product For?

R500 Laser Presentation Remote is for those who love simplicity and compatibility with multiple devices and programs. This plug-and-play presenter has been designed with only three buttons on its interface, offering users an intuitive experience. It works with the most common operating systems, such as Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Android. Better yet, it also supports your favorite presentation programs or apps, including Keynote, PowerPoint, PDF, Prezi, and Google Slides.

What’s Included in the Set

The Logitech R500 package contains a presenter unit, a USB receiver which can be stowed away at the bottom of the unit, and a AAA battery.

LOGITECH R500 Laser Presentation Remote

The R500 Laser Presentation Remote uses a red laser pointer and is designed to be highly compatible with various programs and operating systems. What differentiates this model from its cousins- the R400 and R800 – is the option of dual connectivity. You could use either the wireless USB receiver or Bluetooth to connect the device to your computer.

However, some users have experienced difficulty connecting it to their MacBooks using Bluetooth. Furthermore, the latest MacBooks only come with USB-C ports, while the presenter’s wireless receiver uses a standard USB head. To get around this problem, we recommend using a USB-C (male) to USB3.0 (female) adapter.

The wireless presenter comes with an app that will let you set a presentation timer, customize the button functions, as well as track the remaining battery life. We like the textured grip and easy controls which are very intuitive to use. Going forward and backward in presentation slides feels so smooth, it’s like racing down an empty highway in a sports car. Even if you are new to giving presentations, you could press the buttons without looking at the device!

Weighing in at just 1.9 ounces (54 grams), this is yet another lightweight presenter from Logitech which many professionals would appreciate. Users also commented that they like the quiet buttons on this presenter, as opposed to some models which produce a loud “click” sound each time you press a button. On the flip side, some users complained that their buttons wore out after years of intensive use.

Battery power is supplied by a single AAA battery which is included in the set. With smart battery management using the R500 app, the company claims that you could go up to 12 months using just one battery. User feedback has mostly been positive in this area, with some stating that their power drain has been almost negligible.

In terms of range, the Logitech R500 offers a more-than-adequate operating distance of 65 feet or 20 meters. We think this should be sufficient for most presentation settings, including lecture halls and conference rooms. The R500 is thus a wireless presenter that offers great value for its price.

Setting Up and Installation Process

The Logitech R500 comes in a simple plastic-sealed package. Carefully cut open the plastic packaging using a pair of scissors, and you will find the wireless presenter unit inside. The wireless receiver should be stowed in the bottom compartment – remove it to check its condition. Then, look for the battery compartment at the back of the main presenter unit. Open the lid and ensure that there is a AAA battery inside. Finally, download and install the Logitech Presentation Software on your computer.

For those who are concerned about compatibility with the latest MacBooks and Apple devices, the best alternative is the Logitech Spotlight Presentation Remote. This advanced presenter has Mac and Windows compatibility, and can even be used on LCD/LED TV screens. Its sleek and user-friendly design is extremely appealing, and it even comes in a choice of three colors- gold, slate, and black.

The presenter’s stand-out feature is its highlighting and magnifying function, which are vastly different from the traditional red and green laser pointers. In addition, the Spotlight Presentation Remote has a really impressive range of 98 feet (30 meters). This is at the higher end of most presentation pointers’ range as it’s designed to work in large-sized venues. The timed alerts and quick-charging capabilities are also great features to have, especially for busy professionals who are constantly traveling.

One downside of this presenter is its somewhat steep pricing, and also the lack of magnifying and highlighting functions for iPhones. Nevertheless, we think it is a worthwhile investment for those who present frequently.

The R500 Laser Presentation Remote offers great value to those who use multiple devices and programs. One main advantage of buying it is its universal compatibility, as you will not be required to purchase other presentation pointers to use with different operating systems.

A point of contention is that the R500’s buttons may wear out after years of intensive use. There may also be connectivity issues using its Bluetooth transmission with a MacBook.

Despite these, the Logitech R500 remains one of our favorite presenters due to its versatility, great range and a red laser pointer that is very visible on screens. Furthermore, it has an intuitive interface and includes a very useful presentation timer.

Logitech R500 Manual

The R500 Laser Presentation Remote comes with a simple, easy-to-understand manual. If you have misplaced yours, you may download a soft copy here (courtesy of CoolBlue.nl).

The ‘Getting Started’ Manual has only 4 pages and is designed to make life easy for you. Follow the instructions on the first page to set up your device.

Take note that when connecting using Bluetooth, you have to press and hold the top and bottom buttons of the Logitech R500 simultaneously for about 3 seconds. The LED indicator at the top will start blinking quickly. Turn on the Bluetooth function on your computer, and scan for the R500’s signal. You have three minutes to pair your computer with the R500 Laser Presentation Remote.

Does Logitech R500 require a driver?

The Logitech R500 is plug-and-play, meaning you do not need a driver for it to work. For the best experience though, we would recommend that you download the Logitech Presentation Software immediately after purchasing the presenter (Download Here).

The Logitech Presentation Software allows you to do many things. You could start a presentation by pressing and holding the “Next” button. You could also show a blank screen by pressing and holding the “Back” button at the bottom.

Furthermore, you could set a countdown timer or visual alerts. You will also see a battery icon which indicates the amount of battery life remaining.
