Rear projection is not common; It is unlike the regular projection styles. And since it works with a different technology, it may require special devices to pull off.

Do I need a special projector/screen for a rear projection?
The mechanism behind rear projection is different from that of front projection, hence the need for a special screen.
This screen works by diffusing the projected light hitting its surface, and directs the light to the viewer; it does more light diffusion than light reflection.
Although a little light is still reflected on the projector, the inflection can be seen when the image is viewed from the side where the projector is positioned.
The reflection is not obvious from the viewer’s position. Rather what the viewer sees is a bright, clear, and sharp image because most of the light is directed towards him.
The bright image can be attributed to the distance of the projector from the screen (the projector is usually closer to the screen, in rear projection). Note that, the gain of a rear projection screen varies depending on the viewing angle.
You can find rear projection screens in online stores like Amazon, or you can make a DIY rear projection screen in your home and at a lesser cost. Materials like Spandex and Dazian’s Trapeze will work well for this DIY procedure.
However, you do not need a special projector for rear projection. As long as your projector has the rear projection setting on it, you can adjust the image by flipping it over.
Are all projectors capable of rear projection?
Almost all projectors are capable of rear projection; there is a setting for it on your projector. To access this setting, go to the Menu option on your projector and select Projector settings. From the list of options shown, select Display setting, and then Rear projection setting.
The rear projection setting flips the image around so that when viewed from the other side of the screen, the image is properly displayed and not reversed.
Note that when you use the rear projection setting, the image will become reversed at the side where the projector is placed but will be normal at the opposite side.
There are two other settings which makes rear projection easier, and allow you to install the projector in different positions. They are:
Desktop Rear Projection
This setting allows you to adjust the image when you have the projector placed on a table. Both the projector and the screen are placed on the table, with the screen in front and the projector behind.
As if using a desktop, the viewer can have the projector screen on a table, in front of him. The Desktop rear projection setting is made possible with the use of some mirrors inside the projector.
Ceiling Rear Projection
It is mostly used in commercial rear projection screen applications and when projecting on the glass.
The projector is mounted at a higher level above the top of the rear projection screen, and at a certain distance away. It is placed on its side, and the image, which now appears with its right side up from the viewer’s position, is adjusted from the projector setting.
Ceiling rear projection allows the projector to be fixed on the ceiling or mounted on an adjustable tripod stand.
What projector can I use for rear projection?
Any projector can be used for rear projection. However, there are specific projectors that will work best for rear projectors; you will find them below.
There are several other projectors that you can find online. They are available in different brands and are made by almost every projector manufacturer. Before purchasing any rear projection projector, verify that it supports rear projection.

Can you use a rear-projection screen for the front projection?
Some rear projector screens can be used for front projection, but this is limited to only screens made with materials that can diffuse light as well as reflect light. These screens create some sort of versatility because they can be used in different ways.
The environment, the projector you’re using, and the available space in the room, all determine how you will use the screen.
Although rear projection can cost much to pull off because of the special screen it requires, it has its benefits. These screens can be in different formats. They include the pull-down, portable, DIY and retractable projection screens.
Rear projection projectors are also not a problem; as far as your projector has the necessary settings, you’re ready to make a rear projection.
