Are you tired of the silent treatment from your ‘Netflix and Chromecast’ setup? You’re not alone.

In this quick fix guide, we’ll turn the volume back up on your streaming experience.

Causes

1) Your TV Doesn’t Support Netflix’s Audio Format

no sound when watching Netflix on TV

The frustrating part about having new gadgets in the house is not knowing which settings will be compatible with your devices. Also, every TV might be different, which makes it even more complicated.

For instance, if you’re trying to cast Netflix from your TV and you are not getting audio, perhaps it’s because the Netflix audio format is not supported.

TVs often have settings enabled by default, and many times we’re simply unaware of them. For example, different TV manufacturers have other preferences for the default audio format, meaning that the default format might not be compatible with Netflix’s current setup.

A good example of this is Bitstream and PCM settings.

Bitstream is for unprocessed audio that is processed through an external accessory, like a speaker, used for multi-channel surround sound. In comparison, PCM is for sound that is already processed on a TV where speakers are the only audio source.

2) Your TV’s Speaker Volume Is Too Low

a TV has low volume

When troubleshooting our devices, we sometimes overlook the small details. Make sure to check everything, like the speakers’ volume or TV volume.

If you have your speakers set to zero, it might be the reason why you can’t hear Netflix when casting from your Chromecast.

3) You Have a Defective HDMI Port

It’s important to check every port, wire, and connection if you’re experiencing audio issues with Chromecast.

Therefore, next on our list is to check the HDMI port. It might be defective, filled with debris, or blocked by dust.

4) There’s a Bug with Netflix and Chromecast

Some causes for not having sound when casting Netflix from our Chromecast go beyond defective ports and items. If there’s a bug affecting Chromecast or Netflix, there’s a good chance you might not get any sound when casting.

5) Chromecast Is Not Receiving Enough Power

Sometimes, we plug in our devices and don’t realize we’ve plugged them into an incompatible port or power supply.

For example, some TVs have USB ports that don’t provide enough power for the Chromecast to function properly.

Solutions

Now that we’ve talked about various possible causes for Netflix not having sound when you cast it from your Chromecast, it’s time to shine some light on how we can fix them.

Let’s talk about solutions to our problems.

1) Change the TV’s Audio Format or Settings

If you’re not experiencing sound when casting Netflix from your Chromecast, let’s look at some settings that will help our situation.

If your TV is having a hard time processing Netflix’s audio, try changing your audio settings to PCM.

Although every TV is slightly different, changing your settings should be relatively straightforward.

Here’s how to do so:

Step 1: First, navigate to your TV Settings

Step 2: Next, find and select Sound or Sound Settings

Step 3: Find Expert Settings

Step 4: Look for and select HDMI Input Audio Format

Once you’ve found your HDMI audio format settings, you’ll find options for types of audio. This is where you’ll find Bitstream and PCM.

In our scenario, choose PCM. If need be, accept all changes to apply.

This can surely help get the sound running smoothly.

There’s a good chance your TV settings are slightly different than the ones mentioned above. If that’s the case, please consult your user manual for assistance.

2) Set the TV or Speakers Volume to an Audible Level

increase the TV volume with a remote

If you’re not hearing any sound coming from your TV or speakers when you try to cast Netflix from your Chromecast device, sometimes it’s as easy as checking your volume levels.

If you have a speaker system, ensure they are on and operating as it should.

Once your speakers are turned on, turn the volume up and see if that does the trick.

If you don’t have external speakers and rely on the TV’s built-in speakers, ensure your TV is not set to “Mute” or that your volume is high enough for the volume to be audible.

3) Try a Different HDMI Port

If you’ve plugged your Chromecast into an HDMI port on your TV, the best thing to do is try a different port.

Sometimes HDMI ports can be defective or filled with grime and dust that do not allow your product to connect and work properly. Here’s a quick guide to cleaning your HDMI port, in case you want to go that route.

In this case, if your TV has multiple HDMI ports, try plugging your Chromecast into a different port and see if the audio functions as it should.

If all HDMI ports work fine, it may be time to bring your device to a service center.

On a side note, if you’re changing HDMI ports, please make sure to also change your input settings, so your visuals are displayed correctly as well.

4) Update Netflix and Chromecast Software

With technology’s constant updates, you can’t always avoid bugs. That’s why it’s best to keep your applications and devices up to date.

Updates keep things running smoothly and can avoid audio-visual issues when they arise.

Updating Netflix on Your Chromecast

Updating your Netflix app is pretty easy. There are a few steps you need to take.

First, open your Netflix page in the Google Play Store and click on Update.

Here’s how to update your Netflix app using your Android device:

Using your Android smart device, open the Netflix page in the Play Store, then tap Update.

If by chance, you don’t see any update options, it means everything is up to date.

Updating Chromecast

To update your Chromecast, you’ll need to head to Chromecast updates from your TV.

To do so, head to Settings > System > About > System Update.

Updating Chromecast on TV

Once you hit Update, your Chromecast will not cast until the process is complete.

During the update process, please be aware that it may last up to 10 minutes long.

The LED on the side of your device will pulse red when the update is taking place. Feel free to take a look to monitor that the update is still occurring.

You can also look at the progress screen on your TV if need be.

If, by chance, you need to reboot your device to restart the update automatically, simply unplug the device from its power source, wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in.

Factory Resetting Your Chromecast

If you’ve tried updating your devices and apps and nothing seems to be working, perhaps a factory reset is in order.

If you need to factory reset your casting device, here’s what you need to do.

If you’re using Chromecast with a voice remote, you’ll want to head to the gear icon. This gear represents your settings.

Step 1: Select the Systems option.

Step 2: Click About.

Step 3: Next, find and click Factory Reset.

It’s important to note that this will remove all data and settings from your device.

To factory reset your Chromecast from the device itself, ensure it’s currently plugged into your TV and powered on.

On the back of the gadget, you’ll find a button. Press and hold it. You’ll notice the LED light blinking yellow.

Once the yellow light stops blinking, you may release the button. It will then turn solid white.

Your Chromecast should now reset itself.

Once it has been reset, you will have to set it up again. But hopefully, this time, all audio issues will be resolved.

5) Supply the Chromecast Device with Proper Power

If your Netflix audio issues are caused by a lack of power to your device, remember to use the stock power supply that comes with the device.

Purchasing a replacement power supply might be beneficial if you’re already using everything as it should and it’s still not receiving enough power.

If that’s the case, remember that Chromecast needs at least 5 volts (and 1.5amps which is around 7.5 watts of power).

If you’re in the market for such a device, try the Amazon Basics Dual-Port 24W USB Wall Charger, which will supply plenty of power to your Chromecast.
