How Is a Router Password Different From a Wi-Fi Password?
Before learning how to change your router password, I want to explain the difference between a router password and a Wi-Fi password, to prevent any confusion.
The password for the router is necessary to access its settings, whereas the Wi-Fi password is utilized to connect gadgets to the router’s wireless (Wi-Fi) network.
When setting up the router for the first time, it will have a default router password that is commonly known and easy to guess, such as “admin.”
Therefore, I recommend that you change the default router password to prevent unauthorized access to your router settings, which can even result in being locked out of your own router.
Initial Step: Reset Your TP-Link Router
In case you forget your TP-Link router’s username and password, you should reset the router to erase all configuration settings and revert the router to its default password and username.
Then you can log in to the router configuration panel on a web browser with the default username and password, and change to a new router password as you desire.
You can look for the default router username and password in the router label information.
TP-Link routers usually have the default username and password as admin.
Besides the router’s default username and password, you can also find the router’s default Wi-Fi network name and password on the label information.
Follow these steps to reset your router:
Step 1: Use a pointing head object such as a toothpick to press the Reset button on the router for about 10 seconds.
Step 2: Release the toothpick when you see the indicator lights on your router off and on.
Now that you have successfully reset your router, proceed to the next section to learn how to change your TP-Link router password.
