How Many Types of Projector Stands are there?

It can be overwhelming when you look into projector stands. There are too many different kinds all offering different features.

The truth is, all these projector stands fall under only 4 categories. Tripod projector stands, trolley projector stands, ceiling-mounted projector stands, and wall-mounted projector stands.

It’ll be easier to find the best one for you if you categorize them.

Tripod Projector Stands

Tripod projector stands look like any other tripod. Except it has distinct features for projectors.

One of these features is a fixed or attachable tray. The tray adds safety and balance when you place a projector on top.

There are tripod projector stands that have more than 1 tray. These other trays are genius if you need a laptop, or anything else, near the projector.

Trolley Projector Stands

Any projector stand with wheels belongs to the trolley projector stand category. Even if it stands on legs that look like a tripod.

Trolley projector stands are similar to tripod projector stands in that it has 1 or more trays.

But unlike tripod projector stands, trolley projector stands are usually not portable. This is because most don’t have foldable or collapsible legs.

Ceiling-Mounted Projector Stands

This category isn’t really a stand. It’s more of a mount. Still, it does work to keep your projector at an elevated height as any stand would.

These ceiling-mounted projector stands come in all shapes and sizes. But almost all have a robotic look to it.

It’s important to know that there are 2 kinds of ceiling-mounted projector stands. There are dedicated ones and universal ones.

The dedicated ceiling-mounted stands have 4 fixed arms that screw onto specific projectors. Meaning, only projectors with 4 threaded rings that match the position of the 4 fixed arms can hold it.

The universal ceiling-mounted stands are more versatile. You can adjust the 4 arms to fit any threaded rings, even if there’s only 3. This kind of ceiling-mounted stand works for more projectors than the dedicated ones.

Wall-Mounted Projector Stand

This category is exactly like the ceiling mount projector screen. Only, you mount it on the wall instead of the ceiling.

Wall mounts, however, give a more central hit on the screen than ceiling mounts. This is because you can level it with the screen’s height.

What to Look for in a Projector Stand?

But what exactly should you be looking for? We’ll give you some helpful and important tips.

The main thing to look for is projector compatibility. Any stand will be useless if it doesn’t have the right aspects of your projector.

For example, you buy a ceiling mount that can only carry around 2lbs. Your projector weighs 6lbs. The result will be your stand crashing under the weight.

Another example, you get a stand with a square tray, but your projector is rectangular. Of course, it won’t fit on the tray.

We can’t stress enough the importance of getting a stand compatible with your projector.

Another important thing to consider is placement. Make sure your placement doesn’t mix up with your projector. Let’s explain what we mean.

If you want to avoid clutter, or you want to keep the projector out of sight, a wall or ceiling mount will be good.

But wall or ceiling mounts usually hold projectors inverted. What if your projector can’t invert images? You’ll have to watch it upside-down, which, of course, is not something you want.

In that case, it’ll be better to go for a tripod or trolley stand. Do you see what we mean?

Finally, there are features to consider.

Need a stand that can hold your projector, a laptop, and speakers? Get a tripod or trolley stand with several trays.

Planning to move your projector from room to room? Go for a trolley stand that suits your projector.

Planning on bringing your projector around? Look for a portable stand.

When looking for a projector stand, always have your projector in mind first. Then you can move on to your feature needs.

iShot Pro Pocket Projector Stands are for a specific model, the pocket projectors.

Because of that, it’s not compatible with the larger or heavier models. It’s also not compatible with projectors that don’t have a 1/4-20 threaded ring at the bottom.

These threaded rings are important because it doesn’t use trays. Instead, you screw the projector directly onto the tip-point of the tripod.

If your pocket projector fits all the requirements, you’ll enjoy all the features.

This stand comes with a ready-installed tray that looks more like a table. It also comes with a netted shelf which you can attach below the tray.

Keep in mind that, since the shelf is more like a sling, it can’t carry much weight. You can use it to hold wires or cables. Or even small media players or speakers. Don’t go heavier than 5lbs if you don’t want it breaking.

You can expect another accessory, a carry bag. You can store everything inside this carry bag, the stand, your projector, remote, wires, etc… It’s a great convenience to bring everything in one bag.

If you’re planning on using your projector outdoors, then you might run into an uneven ground problem. This stand has the perfect feature for that.

You can adjust the height of each leg individually. So some legs can be shorter and the other longer to make it even despite the uneven ground. To make it easier, the legs have marked numbers for every inch.

You get an acceptable height range with this stand. The minimum height is 18.5in and the maximum height is 44in.

Another thing great about this stand is that it can carry up to 44lbs of total weight. That’s quite heavy already!

Also, the tray offers ample space with its 15in by 17.5in dimensions.

However, the trays only work as a tabletop, you can’t secure the projector to it. It will fall off if someone knocks the stand over.

Another problem is that the locks for the legs are quite weak. You’ll have to tighten it with a wrench so that the locks won’t open and slip or move the legs.

Vivo Projector Stands are trolley stands. This means it’s very easy to move from room to room with its casters that swivel 360°.

Don’t mistake it as a portable stand, though, because it’s made from heavy steel. You also won’t be able to fold or collapse its legs.

But the heavy steel can provide benefits. It makes the stand durable, scratch-resistant, long-lasting, and able to carry 44lbs.

This is a stand with two ready-installed trays. One at the top and the other one lower, protruding from the side. This design is so efficient as you can place both a projector and laptop, or any accessory, on one stand.

But the top tray is rather small in dimension, reaching only 13.5in to 11.8in. Bigger projectors won’t be able to fit.

For security, the trays have raised edges so nothing can move or slip during adjustments. The trays even have ventilation holes that prevent your projector from overheating.

The top tray can tilt -15° and +15° in either direction to make it easier to adjust the projector to fit the screen. For even better adjustments, you can extend the stand’s neck from 36.3in to 57.5in.

  • The top tray is a bit small.

Don’t want your projector to take up space? Choose a ceiling mount. The SIMBR Projector Ceiling Mount comes with many great features.

First, it’s a universal mount, meaning it’s compatible with a majority of projectors out there. The arms can connect to projectors with 3 or 4 threaded rings. Just make sure the projector’s threaded rings are diagonal, 6.7in to 12in.

You might be a bit hesitant to suspend your projector from the ceiling. But you can trust this ceiling mount to be very sturdy. Its heavy steel material will even allow the total capacity of 33lbs.

You get great flexibility from the SIMBR Projector Ceiling Mount. It can rotate 360°. You no longer need to move this mount every time you reposition your screen.

Not only that, but it can also tilt 60° right and left. So even if your ceiling is sloping, you can still get a perfect angle.

However, it does take time to set up. This doesn’t mean that it’s complicated to set up, it just means that it takes time with all the screwing you’ll need to do.

7. Best in Resourcefulness: Elitech Extendable Ceiling Projector Mount

Elitech Universal Extendable Ceiling Projector Mount 20 to 27.6 inch Drop Height Adjustable, Extendable up to 71 inch With Optional Extension Pole...
  • This projector mount fits to all projectors that can sit into the bottom plate. To purchase this...
  • Standard Mount drop: 20" -27.6", Drop length adjustable. The ceiling parts can be jointed directly...
  • The projector can be titled up or down 15 degree. Loading capacity: 33 lb. Can be used on flat...

Choose Elitech’s extendable ceiling mount if you want a more resourceful stand.

With this ceiling mount, you decide whether you want it close to the ceiling or lower. If you want your projector as close to the ceiling as possible, then you can attach it to the base. But if you want it lower, there’s an extendable pole for that.

A big downside to this is that you’ll have to buy the extendable pole separately. Without the extendable pole, the ceiling drop length is only 20in to 27.6in. If that doesn’t fit with your screen angles, then it’s best to buy the pole.

If you plan on buying an extendable pole, you should get one from the same brand so that it fits perfectly. Like this one:

Sale
Elitech Projector Ceiling Mount Extension Pole, 41" to 71"
  • Made of steel, very solid.
  • Drop length adjustable from ceiling 41" to 71"
  • For Elitech projector ceiling mount ELL3BC ASIN B0042P97T4, or ELL2 ASIN B00K1GZBJI.

This ceiling mount is different from other ceiling mounts because it uses a tray instead of arms.

There’s a big steel bracket that attaches the tray to the base or extendable pole, if you have one. The bracket wraps around the projector to keep it from moving or slipping off.

Since it uses a tray, you can use almost any projector with it. Still, it’s important to make sure. If your projector is less than 15.2in in length and 7.9in or 13.4in in width, then it can fit since that’s the tray size.

You should also look into the height and weight of your projector. The steel bracket’s height reaches 7.4in to 9.4in. The capacity weight for this ceiling mount is 33lbs.

It is a bit bulky, though, with the tray and all. But that’s not a problem if you don’t care about the looks.

What We Like

  • It’s resourceful. You can decide if you want it near the ceiling or lower.
  • It uses a tray instead of arms. This is great because almost any projector can fit into it.
  • It can carry 33lbs. Which is already heavy for a projector.

What We Don’t Like

  • You have to buy the extendable pole separately.
  • It has a bulky look.

8. Best Wall-Mounted Stand: Elitech Wall Projector Mount

Elitech Short Throw Projector Universal Wall Mount up to 56" Extension from Wall
  • Solid metal construction
  • Projector can be extended from wall from 40.8" up to 56.5" with its telescoping arm.
  • Loading capacity: 25 lb

If you’re looking for a mount specifically made for walls, Elitech has one of the best.

It has a long telescopic pole that can extend even further. The shortest length is 40.8in. That can extend up to 56.5in.

This wall projector mount is perfect for short-throw projectors. This is because it’ll put these projectors closer to the screen for clearer images.

Of course, it’s not only for short-throw projectors. Any projector under 25lbs will do. Also, since it’s a universal mount, any projector with 3 or 4 threaded rings can fit.

But, you might need extra steps and tools to install it.

The base of the mount is rather big. This is a problem because only a few of the screws will hit studs. If you want it to be secure, you’ll need toggle bolts for the screws that don’t hit studs.

And make sure you tighten the screws well. If you don’t, the long telescopic arm can sway with the slightest touch.

What We Like

  • It’s the best solution for short-throw projectors mounted on walls. You can extend the poles to move it closer to the screen.
  • It’s compatible with a lot of projectors, at least 70% of projectors. This is because it has a heavy capacity and universal arms.

What We Don’t Like

  • You’ll need toggle bolts for the base mount that doesn’t hit studs.
  • If the screws are not well tightened, the mount will sway.

On the bottom, it has holes that allow airflow to cool the device. There’s also a cable hole that allows any wires or cables to pass through.

With a smooth surface, you don’t have to worry about scratches on your projector.

Because it’s basically a shelf, adjusting your projector to your screen isn’t going to be easy. You’ll need to find the perfect location and measurements.

Another downside is that the screws provided to mount it are bigger than usual. You’ll need a bigger drill tip to get them through the wall.

What We Like

  • It has holes at the bottom. This provides airflow and prevents overheating for devices.
  • It has a cable hole. You can easily plug wires or cables to your projector.
  • It has a smooth surface. You don’t need to worry about your projector or other devices from scratching.

What We Don’t Like

  • It needs perfect and precise placement for a good projector to screen adjustment.
  • The screws are bigger than usual.

How to Install a Projector Stand?

Tripod and Trolley Projector Stands

Installing the tripod and trolley projector stands are very similar.

At the bottom of the tray, there’s a base with a threaded ring in the center. Screw that onto the screw-tip of tripod or trolley stands.

If you get a stand with 2 or more trays, there’s a mount attachment for easy installation.

Usually, you just need to rest the projector on the tray. But for better security, some trays come with elastic straps. Slip those straps over the projector so that it has something to pin it down to the tray.

Of course, there are also tripod and trolley stands with ready-installed trays. Others use threaded rings instead of trays.

Ceiling and Wall Mount Projector Stands

Install ceiling and wall projector mounts in the same way.

First, find the exact location on the ceiling or wall where you want your projector. Drill a hole to stick the mounting base.

Always remember to drill the holes into studs. If you don’t, the drywall might not be strong enough to support both the stand and the projector.

Before you mount the stand, attach the 4 arms to the projector. This will make things a lot easier.

Conclusion

Now that you know the 10 best projector stands, it’ll be easier to find the perfect one for you.

Make a list of what you’re looking for in a stand, and check if one of these products fit the bill.
