What’s the Difference Between Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt (1-4), and USB-C Ports

When checking which port your MacBook has, you may be confused when you’re met with several different port names. It may seem confusing, but it doesn’t have to be.

Apple MacBook Pro

Thunderbolt 1, Thunderbolt 2, and Mini DisplayPorts are all compatible with Mini DisplayPort cables. Additionally, many Mini DisplayPort cables will specify if they can be used with Thunderbolt 1 or Thunderbolt 2 ports.

Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, and USB-C ports can all be used with Thunderbolt compatible USB-C cables.

Yes, all of these Thunderbolt ports are shockingly different! Don’t worry. We’ll break it down for you.

Although Thunderbolt 1 and 2 ports are marked with the same thunderbolt symbol as Thunderbolt 3 and 4 ports, they use different cables. Thunderbolt 1 and 2 ports resemble small rectangles, whereas Thunderbolt 3 and 4 ports are characterized by their long, oval shape with a rectangle prong in the middle.

Now you know the difference between all the MacBook ports!

Connect via an HDMI Cable

Use your MacBook Pro’s and ViewSonic projector’s HDMI ports.

You probably already have an HDMI cable at home, so why not use it for your ViewSonic projector

HDMI ports are found on MacBook Pros released from 2012 to 2015 and in 2021. This is because HDMI ports are bulky and difficult to put on Apple’s slimmer MacBook Airs.

Check if your MacBook has an HDMI port by looking for the HDMI symbol on the side of your laptop.

Plug the HDMI cable into your projector then into your MacBook, and you’re all set!

HDMI cables often go through a lot of wear and tear, so consider replacing them if you’re having connectivity issues.

This is a great option if you have a MacBook since all ViewSonic projectors have an HDMI port.

If you don’t have an HDMI cable at home, check out the Amazon Basics High-Speed HDMI Cable

Connect via an HDMI to VGA Cable

Connect via your MacBook Pro’s HDMI port and ViewSonic Projector’s VGA port.

If your ViewSonic projector’s HDMI port isn’t working, have no fear! You can still connect via the projector’s VGA port using an HDMI to VGA cable.

Although most ViewSonic units have a VGA port, a few models do not. For instance, none of the models in the M series have a VGA port.

HDMI ports are only on MacBook Pros from 2012 to 2015 and 2021

Once you’ve confirmed your MacBook Pro has an HDMI port and your ViewSonic projector has a VGA port, you’re ready to connect them!

Place the VGA end of the cable against its corresponding port. Make sure that all pins are aligned with the pinholes and screw either side of the cable into place. Make sure it’s secure before plugging the HDMI end into your MacBook Pro.

If you have any connectivity problems, check that the pins are accurately and firmly placed, and tighten the screws.

If you don’t have an HDMI to VGA cable, try out the Benfei Gold-Plated HDMI to VGA Cable . Whenever buying this type of cable, always ensure it’s Male-to-Male.

Now you’re ready to start streaming on the big screen!

Connect via a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable

Don’t worry, you can still connect to your ViewSonic projector if your MacBook doesn’t have an HDMI port.

Connect via your MacBook’s Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, or Thunderbolt 2 port.

If your MacBook has a Thunderbolt 3 or 4, read the section below on how to connect your MacBook via a USB-C cable.

The Mini DisplayPort symbol is characterized by a square with vertical lines on either side. Both types of Thunderbolt ports will have a small thunderbolt symbol next to them.

This option is available for the following MacBooks:

  • MacBook Pro 2008-2015
  • MacBook Air 2008 – 2017

Use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable and attach both ends to their respective ports. See the iVANKY Mini DP (Thunderbolt) to HDMI Cable  for a compatible cable for MacBooks and ViewSonic projectors, no adapters required!

If you have MacBook Pro 2008-2015 and 2021, or a MacBook Air 2008-2017 you can connect via a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 1 or 2.

Check if your ViewSonic projector has a VGA port and you’re ready to connect via a Mini DisplayPort to VGA cable!

Check out the Benfei Mini DisplayPort to VGA 6 Feet Cable  if you don’t already have a compatible cable at home.

Plug the Mini DisplayPort into your MacBook and attach the VGA cable to your projector. Ensure that the VGA cable is lined up correctly and that the screws are sufficiently tight.

Now you know how to connect your MacBook Pro or Air to a VGA port!

Connect via a USB-C to HDMI Cable

USB-C to HDMI Cable

Connecting via your MacBook’s USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, or 4 port is a great option if you have a newer model.

The following MacBooks have a USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4 port:

  • MacBook Pro 2016-2021
  • MacBook Air 2018-2020
  • MacBook Retina (12-inch) 2015-2017

Now that you know if your computer has a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port, you can connect it via a USB-C to HDMI cable.

Plug the cable’s USB-C end into your MacBook’s UBC-C or Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port. Now, plug the HDMI cable into your projector and get ready to bring your home theater to life!

If you’re in the market for a good USB-C to HDMI cable, see the Amazon Basics USB-C to HDMI Cable

Connect via a USB-C to VGA Cable

connect via a USB-C to VGA cable

Connect via your MacBook’s USB-C port and your ViewSonic projector’s VGA port.

If your ViewSonic projector’s HDMI port is out of sorts, see if it has a VGA port. Once you’ve confirmed your projector has a VGA port, you’re ready to get connected!

Check that your MacBook has a USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4 port before using a USB-C to VGA cable.

USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 and 4 ports are found on MacBook Pros from 2016-2021, MacBook Airs from 2018-2022, and on the 12-inch MacBook Retina from 2015-2017.

It can be difficult to find a Male-to-Male USB-C to VGA cable, so you may need to purchase the VGA cable and USB-C to VGA adapter separately.

If you don’t have a VGA cable and USB-C adapter, see the Amazon Basics VGA to VGA Cable and Amazon Basics Aluminum USB 3.1 Type-C to VGA Adapter

Plug the USB-C cable into your computer and attach one end of the VGA cable into the adapter’s VGA port, screwing it into place.

Plug the VGA cable into your projector and tighten the screws so it doesn’t budge.

Adapters can sometimes weaken the signal between your projector and MacBook, so make sure all cables are securely attached.

Make sure everything is working properly and you’re good to go!

Connect via a USB-C Cable

Connect via your MacBook’s and ViewSonic projector’s USB-C ports.

Only a few ViewSonic projectors in the PX – Home Theater Series and M series have USB-C ports, but it’s a great option if you don’t want to fuss with adapters or cables.

Once you’ve confirmed that your MacBook Pro 2016-2021, MacBook Air 2018-2020, or MacBook Retina (12-inch) 2015-2017, you can connect it to your unit with a USB-C cable.

Most people will have a USB-C cable somewhere around their homes, but if you don’t, see the Anker Thunderbolt 4 Cable

Plug either end of the USB-C cable into your MacBook and ViewSonic projector, and let movie night commence!

Whether your MacBook has an HDMI port, Mini DisplayPort, or USB-C port, you can connect it to your projector. No confusing bundle of wires is required!
