How Good is Netflix’s 4K Plan?

How Good is Netflix’s 4K Plan?

Demand for 4K content is on the rise, and more and more streaming services are offering it.

If you’re interested in 4K streaming, you’ve probably bumped into Netflix’s 4K plan, which remains one of the most popular despite all of the competition.

But how good is Netflix’s 4K plan?

We have found that Netflix’s 4K plan does have several requirements, including a 15 to 25 mb internet speed and a 4K display that can support 60 hertz and HEVC H.265 video. But if you’re willing to invest in the equipment and bandwidth, the 4K plan will be a good fit for you!

How Good Is Netflix’s 4K Plan?

The answer is: it depends!

If you’re looking for a variety of 4K content, and you have the budget, equipment, and internet to support it, then Netflix’s 4K plan is pretty good!

According to Netflix, here are the perks that come with their Premium plan, which is their most expensive plan and the only one that supports 4K UHD content:

  • Watch on up to four screens at the same time.
  • Download videos on up to four phones or tablets at a time.
  • Have unlimited access to movies, TV shows, and mobile games.
  • Access content on your computer, laptop, TV, tablet, or phone.
  • Watch HD content.
  • Watch 4K UHD content.

However, there was a recent dip in the quality of Netflix’s 4K plan.

In 2020, Netflix implemented a new way of optimizing video streams.

They claimed that their new method of encoding videos decreased the necessary amount of bandwidth, which reduced the bitrate by about half.

Instead of using fixed bitrates (like their old method), their new video encoding changes the bitrate from scene to scene.

What this means, in reality, is that incredibly detailed scenes- like action scenes – will adjust by lowering the bitrate.

This is great in theory, but unfortunately, many users noticed that, in reality, it decreases the video quality so much that they can sometimes see individual pixels.

So, if you get Netflix’s 4K plan, you may have to adjust your playback settings to High, which will maintain the original bitrate even if it means using more bandwidth.

What Do You Need for Netflix’s 4K Plan?

Netflix’s 4K plan has several requirements so that you can get it to work in the first place, and so that you can make the most of it.

For the 4K plan, you’ll need a decent broadband connection, a supported display device, and a supported browser (if you’re using a PC).

Broadband Connection

A wifi connection

Users have found that you need at least fifteen MB to maintain a stable video stream when it comes to your broadband connection.

However, if you can get a better speed from your internet service provider, it’s highly recommended. Netflix recommends an ideal speed of twenty-five MBPS.

How Much Space Do 4K Videos Take Up?

A laptop with 4k solution

If you have a monthly maximum on the amount of data you can stream with your internet service, or if you’re considering buying and downloading 4K videos, you may be wondering how much space 4K videos take up.

The answer is: it depends on the fps of the video. The higher the fps, the more data the 4K video will use up.

However, if you want a general estimate, we can use 4K resolution at 30 fps, which is typical for a 4K video.

At 4K resolution and 30 fps, one minute of video is equal to around 350 to 375 MB.

With this information, we can estimate the number of minutes of 4K video that can fit in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB.

How Much Space 4K Videos Take Up
Number of GB Number of Minutes of 4K Video
64 GB 170
128 GB 341
256 GB 682

As you can see in the table above:

  • 170 minutes can fit in 64 GB.
  • 341 minutes can fit in 128 GB.
  • 682 minutes can fit in 256 GB.

The top five TVs supporting Netflix’s 4K plan are Samsung QLED models Q900TS, Q800T, Q90T, Q80T, and Q70T.

On average, 4K videos at 30 fps take up 375 mb for every minute of video. This means 64 GB can store 170 minutes, 128 GB can store 341 minutes, and 256 GB can store 682 minutes.
