It is still common to find monitors with either DVI or VGA. At the same time, many output sources use only one of the two technologies.
A lot of the time, an output source uses DVI, while a monitor might use VGA. In cases like these, you need an adapter, but do DVI-to-VGA cables, and adapters reduce quality.
A DVI-to-VGA adapter does not cause a reduction in quality on its own.
Remember, with anything IT-related, you are always limited to the lowest common denominator, which is VGA in this situation. When VGA goes up to 1080p, you might lose quality, but this is due to the VGA connection.
Look, many people say that using DVI-to-VGA adapters will not reduce quality.
I just gave a different answer, so I am responsible for expanding on that answer. I will also tell you everything you need to know about DVI-to-VGA adapters.
So, for everything you need to know, keep reading.
Quick Navigation
Do DVI-to-VGA Cables (Adapters) Work?
DVI connects your output source to a display using a digital signal. On the other hand, VGA uses an analog signal.
A DVI-to-VGA adapter needs to convert the output from digital to analog before the input device can register the signal. So, while a DVI-to-VGA adapter seems simple, it is quite a remarkable little device.
They do work, and you won’t notice the difference in some cases.
However, you need to ensure you get the suitable DVI to VGA cable because many products fail to deliver.
I recommend using the ABLEWE 1080p Active DVI-D to VGA Adapter . It is one of the best DVI-to-VGA adapters on the market and delivers on what it promises.
- Premium Performance:converting digital DVI signals to analog VGA signals; Integrated chipset...
- High Grage Video:HIGH QUALITY VIDEO - Supports HDTV resolution up to 1080p @60Hz and PC graphics...
- Quick and Hassle-free- DVI-D to VGA setup, 25 pin DVI-D Male to 15 pin VGA Female.

Here are a few reasons why I recommend this device:
- It works with most VGA displays, thanks to its integrated chipset.
- It uses no external power source.
- Supports 1080p @ 60 Hz.
- It is plug-and-play.
Do DVI-To-VGA Adapters Work for Audio?
Even though DVI uses a digital signal, it does not transfer audio data. Also, VGA only transfers video signals.
So, using an adapter will have no effect, and there is no way to transfer audio signals.
With that said, most motherboards have some form of sound card built into them, and you can use a separate cable if you need to plug speakers into your computer. If, for some reason, your motherboard does not have a sound card, you can find USB sound cards.
I recommend using the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Play! 3 .

While cheaper options are available, the Creative Labs Play! 3 is still an inexpensive option, made by a company with an excellent reputation.
Do DVI-to-VGA Adapters Increase or Reduce Quality?
Firstly, the adapter does not make you lose quality, but there is more to it than that. Before we properly dive into the answer, we must know the capabilities of both DVI and VGA.
Let’s take a look:
- DVI supports a resolution of up to 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz.
- Dual-link DVI supports a resolution of up to 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz.
- VGA supports up to 1080p @ 60 Hz.
So clearly, DVI supports a higher resolution than VGA.
When you consider that you are always limited to the weakest link, it is clear that you will not get the full capabilities that DVI offers when converting it to VGA.
Many people say that you don’t lose quality when using a DVI to VGA adapter. Look, either the question is framed wrong, or the person answering it doesn’t have time to expand on the answer.
The truth is, if the monitor is a VGA monitor, you will still be taking full advantage of it.
If the output is DVI and the display only supports VGA, you will not be taking full advantage of the DVI connection. That is the best way to frame the answer.
Also, VGA loses this quality when you push it to 1080p. We have written a recent article where we discuss VGA in-depth. It would be best to look at that article once you are done reading this one.
9 Easy Steps To Use a DVI-to-VGA Adapter
If you do not adequately connect a DVI connection to its port, you can damage the pins. Because you are using the adapter, you will need to make three connections in total, all of which can result in damage.
Feel free to follow these 9 easy steps on using a DVI-to-VGA adapter:
- Switch your Laptop or PC off.
- Line the DVI pins up with the DVI port on your output device (PC or Laptop) using the DVI adapter.
- Once the pins are lined up, connect the connector to the port. Do not use too much force.
- Screw in the screws to keep everything secure.
- Once that is secured, take one end of your VGA cable and line up the pins with the female VGA port on the adapter.
- Once that is secured, screw in the screws to keep everything stable.
- Take the other end of the VGA cable and, using the same process, connect it to the monitor.
- Test the connection by switching everything on.
- If it is not working, try again.
Using a DVI-to-VGA Adapter: What to Avoid?
A system that supports DVI will support at least 1080p. So, if your monitor supports that, you want to go for an adapter that also supports it. By doing this, you won’t get a reduction in quality.
If your PC is relatively horizontal to your display, you want to try and get an adapter that doesn’t have a cable, but instead converts the DVI port to VGA.
If your PC is below your display, having an adapter that resembles a cable is your best option because it prevents a lot of pulling and stress on the VGA cable.
In the next section, I list both types of DVI-to-VGA connectors, so you shouldn’t have a problem there.
Because the adapters are relatively inexpensive, you can get both and see which works best for you. That way, you also always have a spare
Top 3 Adapters
The adapter that we have already listed in this article will not be included in this section. It is the best adapter in my experience.
Instead, I will be giving you three alternatives. So, here are our top three DVI to VGA adapters:

Final Thoughts
That brings us to the end of this article.
Whenever you have a question like this, you want to look at what your weakest link has to offer.
That is your benchmark, and that is the quality you can expect regardless of what adapter you are using.
