Can you Get 4K 144Hz?

Can you Get 4K 144Hz?

4K monitors deliver the best immersive video experience with super clear details. That is why they are becoming a must-have for every gamer. Coupled with a high-speed refresh rate, the experience is magical.

We’ve been getting quite a massive number of inquiries from gamers on whether they can get 4K monitors at 144 fps which makes the topic for this post.

Read along to discover what it takes to play games at 4K and 144Hz and the best 4K monitors with such high refresh rates.

Does 4K 144Hz exist?

Yes, 4k at 144Hz monitors exist. Because of the great combination of higher resolution and higher refresh rates, 4K monitors with 144 refresh rates per second are steadily gaining demand. They offer impressively sharp and clear details with super-smooth motion.

As great as this experience sounds, it takes a toll on a graphics card; that is why a lot of the older graphic cards do not support it.

To enjoy what a 4K at 144Hz offers, you will need a next-gen graphics card, which sadly doesn’t come cheaply. But if you don’t mind parting with some hefty cash for a magical viewing experience, a 4K 144Hz is the best, especially for gaming. That is why most of these monitors have console mode made specifically for the newer consoles.

What does it take to play games at 4K and 144Hz?

Playing pc games with a 4K monitor at a refresh rate of 144Hz is every hardcore gamer’s dream. Luckily it’s a dream that is easily achievable albeit extremely demanding to the wallet.

Both the panel and the supporting hardware required to run the monitor are extremely costly. We are talking about thousands of dollars just to achieve those buttery-smooth gaming visuals.

Sounds like a lot?

Well, let’s break it down for you.

So for starters, you will need a 4K monitor which costs well into hundreds of dollars. The least costly, good-quality monitor you can get is the 27” LG 27GN950-B  Ultragear gaming monitor. This is the most reasonably priced we’ve come across.

With a 4K monitor, you definitely need a high-performing graphics card for the PC to be able to hit the 144 refresh rates. Your best option, in this case, are the GeForce RTX 2080 dual graphics card to achieve 100 refresh rates and the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti  to get to 144 refresh rates. The graphics card including the setup to link the two cards via Nvidia’s new NVLink system will set you back a couple of thousands of dollars.

Other powerful graphics cards that can hit 144 fps with a 4K monitor resolution include GeForce RTX 3090,   the RTX 3070 , and  RTX 3080 . These cost an arm and a leg and probably a kidney too, but the gaming experience is totally worth it. For the RTX 3090 particularly, you will never have to worry about upgrading in the near future. Cheaper GPUs most likely won’t be able to hit 144 fps at that resolution.

When you add the cost of the monitor, expect to cough up a six-figure amount. See how expensive it is to play games at 4K at 144Hz?

Whether this is a worthy investment or not, it all boils down to what you want.

One question we come across often is if it is possible to play games on 4k 144Hz consistently. To be honest, this depends on whether the game you wish to play is set to be supported by Nvidia’s NVLink technology. Also, it depends on whether it is processed by Nvidia to support its DLSS anti-aliasing feature.

DLSS is a rendering technique that lowers the resolution to reduce the load put by the game on your graphic’s card then rebuilds the image to its native resolution not to impact the visual quality of the game. So you will still play your game at 4k 144Hz.

3 Best 4K 144Hz Monitors

If you are convinced that a 4K 144Hz monitor is what you need then we suggest you look at the options below:

1. LG 27GN950-B

The LG 27GN950-B Ultragear Gaming Monitor is a great 4k monitor with a super high refresh rate of up to 160Hz. This is our topmost recommendation for hardcore gamers looking for an impressive gaming experience and ready to pay the price.

The monitor has incredible fast response times and low input lag and comes with a FreeSync VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support and G-SYNC compatibility.

Take note however that the LG 27GN950-B does not have HDMI 2.1 support therefore you’d need to use a DisplayPort connection in addition to a high-end graphics card to achieve the 160 Hz refresh rate.

The LG 27GN950-B has a fairly good build with a gamer-oriented back design although lacking in ergonomics. Most importantly is that it does not swivel, although you can rotate it a couple of extra degrees when in landscape or portrait mode for a better viewing angle.

Noted also, is that it has a low contrast ratio and does not handle reflection so well although it brightens up well enough to reduce glare in well-lit rooms. These two concerns disqualify it for darkroom gaming.

The monitor features V-shaped stands that are strong enough to hold the monitor. The design of the stand leaves enough room to place some items in front of the monitor and also allows for cable management. To release the stand, simply press the quick-release button.

You will be in for a good treat if you desire to build a multi-monitor setup with the  LG 27GN950-B, thanks to the extremely thin borders.

Overall, the  LG 27GN950-B is a great 4K 144Hz gaming monitor. The build is decent, and even though it has a few disappointments, the performance is impressively great. It’s perfect for die-hard gamers, content creators, and designers. A similar monitor but with a sturdier build would be the Dell Alienware AW2721D  .

2. Gigabyte AORUS FI32U

The Gigabyte AORUS FI32U is a high-tech 4K monitor with a refresh rate of 144Hz screen, built for gamers but can also be used for other tasks. Unlike the LG 27GN950-B, this monitor supports HDMI 2.1. Also, it supports the DSC, (Display Stream Compression) technology so even if your graphics card isn’t upgraded to support HDMI 2.1 but supports DSC, you can still enjoy what Gigabyte AORUS FI32U has to offer- high resolution at high refresh rates.

The Gigabyte AORUS FI32U guarantees 4K at 144Hz with a considerably lower input lag, decent reflection handling, incredibly fast response time, and a gaming experience that is tear-free. The latter is because the Gigabyte AORUS FI32U supports FreeSync VRR technology.

Perhaps the biggest downside to the Gigabyte AORUS FI32U is the low contrast. However, we’ve noted that this seems to be a common issue with a lot of IPS monitors.

Even though the monitor comes with a dimming feature,  it’s terribly bad, therefore, you are better off without it.

The other thing we noted is that the monitor has a wide footprint. Thankfully, the legs are thin and therefore don’t take up much front space. You can still place some items in front of the display.

Otherwise, the Gigabyte AORUS FI32U has an excellent build, awesome text clarity, great accuracy, and comfortable wide viewing angles. With a large screen space to work on, we can guarantee you that It’s an incredible monitor for multi-tasking in addition to gaming. However, if you prefer a much bigger screen, we’d suggest the  Gigabyte AORUS FV43U  which we will look at in a minute.

AORUS FV43U 43" 144Hz 2160p HBR3, NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, Exclusive Built-in ANC, 3840x2160 Display, 1ms Response Time, HDR, 96% DCI-P3, 1x...
  • 43” 3840x2160 Super Speed VA Display, NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible
  • Brightness(Typ) is 300cd/m²
  • 144Hz Refresh Rate, High Bit Rate 3 support (HBR3)

We’ve had a great experience with  AORUS FV43U. That is why it’s on this list.

This 43-inch 4K monitor is designed for console gamers and resembles a TV more than a regular monitor. In fact, unless you are told it’s a monitor, you will easily pass it for a TV.

The monitor comes with HDMI 2.1 ports instead of a DisplayPort and has an incredibly fast response time. Unlike the two previous models, this has an amazing contrast, meaning the blacks appear as deep blacks even when watching in a dark room and the black is uniform throughout the screen.

While this sets it apart, the trade-off is a considerably higher input lag than the two previous models and most other similar monitors. This can be pretty disappointing to a lot of gamers.

Another downside is that the stands are fixed and no amount of ergonomic adjustments can be made. Your best bet is a mounting arm which is an option most users say has worked pretty well for them.

On the bright side of things, the large screen space is perfect for multitasking, reflection handling is pretty okay, great text clarity, and great visibility thanks to the high peak brightness.

The only thing we’d suggest is doing a VESA mounting. Because of its wide feet, the monitor can take up so much desk space as most typical monitors.

Overall, AORUS FV43U is a worthy investment. Whether for gaming, office work, or content creation. And even though it’s entirely made of plastic except for the stands that are made of steel, we don’t foresee any major problems.

Well, these are the best 4K at 144Hz monitors according to our experience. However, we’d also recommend a few more that we believe are great monitors:

  1. ASUS ROG Strix XG27UQ
  2. AORUS FI32U
  3. LG 27GN950-B Ultragear

So, can you get 4K at 144Hz? Yes, there are a good number of 4K monitors with this super high refresh rate. Most are designed for gamers and advanced graphic designers who require sharp and clear visuals that run very smoothly.

You only need to arm yourself with a good chunk of money because they don’t come cheaply. The cost of the panel plus the supporting hardware and setup can be pretty high. For full-time gamers, this may be a worthy investment, however, small-time gamers and other users may find this an unnecessary expense.

However, should you feel convinced that a 4K monitor at 144 refresh rates is what your heart wants, we’ve recommended a couple of options that are price-considerate but of awesome quality.
