Buyer’s Guide

Now that you have a major list of options to choose from, what are the most important things to look out for? Should you prioritize one feature over another? Below are some very important things to look out for when buying your projector to make sure you make the right choice for your home theater.

Distance

Not all short throw projectors are created equal. Depending on your room size and space requirements, you are likely to need a specific distance from projector to wall in your home theater. If this is the case, knowing the projectors throw distance is going to be one of the most important factors in your buying decision.

Resolution

Now that 4k is becoming the new normal, it would be wise to get a projector that has a resolution of 3840×2160 (4k). This is going to give you the sharpest image possible, and allow you to see even the smallest details in your favorite movies. 1080p is still passable, and could be a good budget option, but 4k beats it in every way.

Brightness

This is the king of all specs when it comes to projectors. Short throw projectors are in need of the same amount of brightness as a normal projector, so shooting for over 2,500 ANSI Lumens is going to give you the best results possible. Anything below that will create a more washed out image in a room that is not completely dark.

Smart Apps and Features

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of buying a Roku, ChromeCast, Apple TV, etc, then buying a projector with smart apps or a full operating system like Android TV built-in is the way to go. This will save you not only some extra money in buying another device, but also will allow you to have even less wires between your projector and the room you are in. A true win-win.

Ultra-Short Throw Projector Reviews

While there are many ultra-short throw projectors on the market, some are well below average in comparison to others. We have weeded out the weakest ones and given you ten great options for your home theater so you can make an informed decision.

Optoma GT5500

Optoma GT5500 1080p 3D DLP Ultra Short Throw Gaming Projector
  • Screen Size Range: 80-inches from 17.7 inches; 100-inches from 22.1 inches
  • Brightness: 3500 ANSI Lumens
  • Contrast Ratio: 25,000:1; Keystone Correction: Yes, Lens Shift: No

The name Optoma goes hand-in-hand with home theater projectors. They have been making them for a very long time, and their short-throw line of projectors are extremely good. The GT5500 is a great option if you are on a bit of a budget but still want many great features.

This projector has a viewable screen size of 100-inches from a mere 13-inches away from the wall. That is a great size for a home theater screen, especially if projecting in a small room. At that size, combined with the 1080p resolution, you will get a nice clear picture whether watching movies or playing games.

This projector sports a nice bright 3,500 Lumens rating, giving you plenty of brightness even in a less-than-ideal lighting situation. If you plan on putting a projector in your living room instead of a home theater, this could be a great option.

What We Like

  • Really good brightness for an entry level projector.
  • Only need 13-inches of space to fill a 100-inch screen.
  • 6,500 hour lamp life means less expense in the long run.

What We Don’t Like

  • Only 1080p, which is less sharp than competitors.

Epson is known for their business class projectors, but in recent years they have been making a big push into the home theater market. Their impressive EpiqVision line will leave you in awe, especially the LS500 which is one of the best ultra-short throw projectors on the market today.

This projector has a whopping 4,000 Lumens of brightness, which is one of the best available for the home theater. Given the 4k resolution you get here, many of the competitors drop their brightness on the top end. Not Epson, they give you all the brightness you need.

The insane 1,500,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio goes hand-in-hand with the brightness, giving you a beautiful image. The visuals are improved even more when HDR is enabled, giving you a true cinema experience from the comfort of your own home, and to think you get that total package with a throw distance of only 15.4-inches!

What We Like

  • Wonderful brightness for a home theater projector.
  • The HDR image looks fantastic.
  • 4k resolution is extremely sharp and pleasing to look at.

What We Don’t Like

  • Too expensive for many people.

LG HF85LA

  • Included Components: Projector; Power Cord; Remote; Batteries; Manual
  • Power Source Type: Corded Electric. Standby Mode- <0.5W
  • Connectivity Technology: Bluetooth;Usb;Dual Hdmi

LG was one of the first consumer brands to bring ultra-short throw projectors to the market. This has given them time to tweak and perfect their products, giving their line of projectors a heads up above the competition. The HF85LA is a great example of that, for a mid-range projector, you are getting an amazing piece of hardware.

The design and shape is extremely small and sleek. It will not be distracting like some of the largest offerings out there. Pair that with the bluetooth speaker support and you can combine the projector and your favorite speaker to give you the exact look and sound you are looking for.

While the projector is only 1080p, it has an extremely good picture. This could be due to the close proximity to the wall or screen, only needing 8 inches to produce a nice large image. Nice and sharp, great colors, and an impressive 150,000:1 contrast ratio. This projector’s main downfall is the brightness, only outputting 1,500 lumens, which is going to be fine in darkness, but will struggle with any ambient light.

What We Like

  • The product design and features are top-notch.
  • Inclusion of LG’s Smart TV apps.
  • Inclusion of wireless screen sharing to stream movies right from your phone.

What We Don’t Like

  • Brightness is only 1,500 Lumens

WeMax may not be a brand name that you recognize, but after this review, you will definitely be giving them a look. Their Nova ultra-short throw projector has all the specs and high end features to compete with any of the large brands offerings and then some.

First, you are getting a full UHD 4k resolution image with this projector. This is going to give you that super sharp, almost life-like look you expect from a cinema experience. You are going to need every pixel of that, given this projector can create a screen size of up to 150-inches!  The good news is, even projecting a nice large image, this projector only needs to be placed a miniscule 9 inches from the wall.

The brightness is a bit on the lower side, but still competitive with other high-end 4k projectors at 2,100 Lumens. While it will not blow you away with brightness, that is enough to have a decent viewing experience even with some ambient light in the room. The 1,500,000:1 contrast ratio helps keep the image looking the best possible in all situations.

What We Like

  • 4k image is extremely sharp and pleasing to the eye.
  • 150-inch screen size beats most of the competitors in this category.
  • Fantastic contrast ratio for dark blacks and nice bright highlights.

What We Don’t Like

  • Image quality in the corners can be a bit soft.

  • Incredible Image Quality: 2700 ANSI Lumens brightness from X-Fusion laser light technology, 4K UHD...
  • Cinematic Sound: A premium 30W smart soundbar delivers audio-immersion using award-winning dbx-tv...

Hisense is generally thought of as a “budget” brand, but in recent years they have been upping the quality to compete with their big brand brothers. This has carried over to their projector line, and the 120L5F is one of the best ultra-short throw projectors out there.

For the same budget as some higher end units, Hisense is offering not only your short throw projector here, but also an impressive 120-inch ALR (ambient light rejection) screen as well. This is going to help boost the image to keep its brightness even when used in a well-lit room. On top of that, you also will get a compact system between the projector itself and the screen, given the projector only needs to be placed 13.8-inches from the wall.

This unit features 2,700 Lumens of brightness, which works well when combined with the included screen. A 30W speaker is in the unit giving you decent sound while you wait to budget in your full featured home theater setup. The projector is also running Android TV, giving you a plethora of apps to watch your favorite shows.

What We Like

  • Included screen has fantastic performance.
  • 4k image is both bright and sharp.
  • Android TV gives you access to any platform you choose.

What We Don’t Like

  • Reliability is questionable when compared to higher-end brands.

If you are looking to increase the visual fidelity of your current projector, all while getting the advantages of an ultra-short throw projector, the Optoma CinemaX P2 is about as good as it gets. They have combined super high-end projector features in a compact projector that only needs to be inches from the wall.

One of the standout features of the CinemaX P2 is the bright and vivid colors. The 6-segment color wheel in this unit will give you the most screen accurate, pleasing colors of any projector on the market. You can get the closest experience possible to those beautiful cinema colors with this projector.

You can get a crisp and clear 4k image at up to 120-inches with this unit while the projector sits only 5.7-inches from the wall. The brightness is a very respectable 3,000 lumens, but this projector is still meant to be watched in close to full darkness to get the full benefit of these amazing features.

What We Like

  • Impressive color accuracy and vividness.
  • Sharp and clear 4k image quality.
  • 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio gives great black levels and highlights.

What We Don’t Like

  • Set up can be a bit in-depth and tedious.

Another brand that you will not see commercials and reviews readily available for, the OMMC 4k Laser TV is a great option if you don’t plan to buy a nice screen and simply want to project on a white wall. It may not have the name clout, but the picture more than makes up for it.

One of the main draws of this projector is it can cast a 100-inch screen from a measly 7.7-inches from the wall! That is better than most ultra-short throw projectors out there, even some that cost many times more than the OMMC. If you are short on space, this projector is a great choice.

This unit offers 2,500 ANSI lumens of brightness, giving you enough to have a window open in the room and still be able to enjoy your favorite TV shows and movies. The HDR mode on this projector is going to kick up the visual fidelity a lot in dark rooms when you want that true cinema feeling.

What We Like

  • 4k HDR image is pleasing to look at.
  • Only need 7.7-inches of room to project.
  • Laser technology doesn’t require a screen for a good viewing experience.

What We Don’t Like

  • Included apps and features are lacking.

Having a nice large, clear image is the hallmark of what makes a projected image far more powerful than current televisions. VAVA has produced a killer projector with the VA-LT002 which is something that is going to blow most people’s minds. While you may expect it from LG or Samsung, VAVA has created a winner with this projector.

How does 4k, HDR, and 2,500 lumens of brightness sound? You get all three of those features right here in this projector. The result is an image that is nice and bright, colorful, and extremely sharp. You can’t ask for much more in the image department.

You only need 7.2-inches of space from the wall to project on a 100-inch screen. By backing the projector up just a bit, you can increase the size of the image all the way up to 150-inches! That is extremely large for an ultra-short throw projector.

What We Like

  • 4k + HDR gives a beautiful image for a home theater.
  • Not much space is needed to get a nice large image.
  • 60W Harman Kardon speakers can provide adequate sound for a small space.

What We Don’t Like

  • Limited and frustrating app selection compared to competitors.

  • Up to 2700 ANSI Lumens brightness - laser projector (Class 1 laser)
  • Display a 120” Screen from just 7. 2 inch away from projector surface

Most ultra-short throw projectors boast about being able to project a 100-inch image from under 8-inches on the top end. While this is great, LG has one upped them with the HU85LA. How does 120-inches from a distance of 7.2-inches sound? Fantastic!

Distance is great and all, but it all means nothing without a good image. Luckily, LG has created a projector that gives you a fantastic UHD 4k image that will rival any projector of TV on the market.
