Are Epson Projectors Good for Movies? 5 Top Picks

When someone brings up projectors a few brands come to mind, but possibly none more so than Epson. They have been making high quality projectors for years, and chances are you have run into them in your day-to-day or work life.

But are Epson projectors any good for a home theater? Let’s take a look at the five best Epson projectors you can use in your home, and what makes them better than the rest.

Are Epson projectors good for movies?

We can say without a shadow of a doubt the answer to this question is: YES! Epson has a whole line of home theater projectors that are fantastic. Even some of their more business focused and budget offerings will work well for a simple family movie night.

So, what then exactly makes Epson projectors a good choice for your home theater? There are a few things they do very well that set them apart from the competition.

Epson projectors are known for being quite bright. This comes from their background in office and school projectors, where you need a nice bright image to see with a lot of ambient light. You will have a hard time finding one of their projectors with under 3,000 Lumens.

This technology carries over into their home theater projectors, giving you plenty of brightness to watch your favorite shows even in dimly lit rooms.

You will be hard pressed to find an Epson projector with less than 15,000:1 contrast ratio, giving them a good mark here. Many budget options on the market will have much less than this, giving you less than optimal black levels (meaning the black area of your movies and shows will be more grey/light than you would like).

You will need to step up to a more “pricey” option in the Epson lineup to get higher than 20,000:1 contrast, but they are all very good when you compare price to performance in the contrast department.

Want a super sharp, ultra HD 4k gorgeous cinema picture? Epson has high-end projectors that will suit your needs. They rival even the top-of-the-line cinema projectors you can buy for home theater use.

They also have really good 1080p and lower resolutions, providing exceptional sharpness and clarity for their “less-than-4k” options. They deserve high marks here as well.

Lamp Life

The last thing you should know about Epson projectors is they have good lamp life. This means you won’t have to constantly fork over money to replace a bulb only to have it die in a couple of weeks.  Running even their cheapest projectors in Eco mode is going to give you around 12,000 hours of use.

Another plus in the bulb department is the price. Many projector companies charge a ton of money for replacements, even on their entry level offerings. Epson is quite affordable, and won’t break the bank when it is time to replace the lamp and bring your projector back to life.

Now that we know why Epson projectors make good home theater projectors, let’s take a look at five options we think are the best in their class. You are sure to find a projector below to fit your individual use case.

1. Budget Option: Epson VS260

If you are on an extremely tight budget, but still are looking to dip your toe into a home theater projector, check out the Epson VS260. This projector is extremely affordable, and still will give you a decent home theater experience.

Don’t expect an insane resolution here, this projector is only XGA (1024×768). While this may sound like a resolution from the early 2000’s, don’t worry… movies will still look good here. The only way this resolution is going to be a downfall is if you plan on using it for anything text related (reading/writing).

This projector has an impressive amount of brightness, clocking in at 3,300 lumens. This puts it above even some higher end projectors, and will give you a good viewing experience even with a bit of ambient light. The contrast ratio is a respectable 15,000:1 as well, which is a decent range for an entry level projector.

All-in-all this projector is going to be perfect for your first home theater project to see if it is right for you. It would also make a great projector for a kids room where you just want to play their favorite cartoons right on a bedroom wall.

What We Like

  • Budget-friendly
  • Good brightness

What We Don’t Like

  • Only XGA resolution
  • Loud fan

Stepping up a notch from the budget projector we have our first in the line of Epson’s Home Cinema range. The Epson Home Cinema 880 is a very nice entry level projector that will please many people as they step up from their cheaper projector into the world of true home cinema.

This projector boasts a respectable brightness level of 3,300 lumens, which will work in a variety of viewing environments. The 16,000:1 contrast ratio is perfectly respectable for this entry level home cinema projector, and will give you enough contrast to enjoy your movies and games.

The Home Cinema 880 has a resolution of 1920×1080, or Full HD. For the entry level price point of this projector, that is a fantastic value.

This projector will give you a nice crisp image on any screen size, though it won’t be quite as nice as the more expensive 4k options. Still a major step up over the budget projectors out there.

If you are thinking about turning a basement or spare bedroom into a home theater, but don’t want to break the bank for your experiment, check out the Epson Home Cinema 880. It is a great option for the majority of home theater owners.

Let’s say you have an older projector, or started with a budget option, and are now ready for an upgrade. You were thinking 4K, but were unsure if that is the route to go. Checking out the Epson Home Cinema 4010 will quickly put your worries to rest.

The stunning 4k image you get out of this projector is unparalleled at it’s price point. We have escalated above the “budget-friendly” options here, but we’re not out of the realm of most people’s budget when it comes to a good home theater projector. And the package Epson has put together here will blow you away.

So we mentioned this is a 4k projector, but it also packs an amazing color profile to go with that. The very accurate 10-bit colors are accentuated by the built-in HDR to make your movies really pop off the screen. If you have not experienced HDR in your home theater yet, this projector will make sure you never go back.

The brightness of this projector is not as good as some others, but it is not designed to be used with a lot of ambient light. This is a true and honest home theater projector, made to be used in proper cinema lighting. So don’t expect this to rival the business projectors that can be used with all the lights on.

With the lights appropriately set in your home theater, this projector will give you a fantastic contrast ratio of 200,000:1! That blows all the previous projectors away (though it does come at a price). This is the first big step into a bonafide home theater experience that can rival the professional projectors.

What We Like

  • 4k Resolution
  • Fantastic colors
  • Motorized lens for easy adjustment

What We Don’t Like

  • 4k HDR is only 30Hz (fine for movies, not good for gaming)
  • Very large and quite heavy

5. High-Quality: Epson Home Cinema 5050UBe

If you are a movie aficionado, and want the absolute best home theater experience possible without spending 5 figures, the Epson Home Cinema 5050UBe may be exactly what you are looking for. It has all the same features you will find in projectors that cost three times as much.

This projector produces one of the most crisp and clear 4k images of any projector on the market. Movies look great, games as well, but where this extra resolution and sharpness helps the most is in reading text. So if you are a person who loves their subtitles, rejoice!

This projector has a decent 2,600 lumens of brightness which is more than enough for your standard home theater. Just make sure the lights are all off, and you will see this projector in all of its glory. The colors are extremely accurate and pleasing here as well.

Where this projector really shines is in its contrast ratio. This bad boy has a whopping 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio! You will notice this immediately because the black levels are extremely deep. Most projectors in the more budget side will have a grey or blue tint to the blacks of an image, but not here. This projector blew us away with its absolutely amazing blacks and contrast.

What We Like

  • Extremely crisp 4k image
  • Beautiful colors
  • Unbelievable black levels and contrast

What We Don’t Like

  • Expensive for some

To answer the initial question, yes, Epson makes some fantastic home theater projectors that rival any other mainstream brand. While they may be well known in the business and classroom space, don’t let that sway you into not looking at them when kitting out your own home theater.

If you are looking for the one singular Epson projector we would recommend, go for the Epson Home Cinema 4010. It is quite affordable for a 4K projector, and that high resolution image will ensure you have a pleasurable experience in your home theater for years to come.
